You’ve spent weeks preparing your application (or, you know, an hour if you read our blog post on Five NTSA Applications That Can Be Completed in 60 Minutes or Less — we don’t judge!). You’ve rewatched your audition video or re-read your statement thousands of times. Not only that, you’ve shown it to your parents, your teachers, your classmates, and your dog (who didn’t offer any useful criticism). But you still can’t bring yourself to hit that submit button, and the clock’s ticking down the minutes until the application deadline.
These are our words of wisdom for you:
Done is better than perfect.
Hockey player Wayne Gretzky once said: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” While we know that this is a sports metaphor (and that alone might prompt some of you to tune out), we agree with him completely. If you don’t hit that submit button and send in your application, you’ll never know what could have been. We’re not going to tell you that rejection isn’t a possibility. We’ve been rejected tons of times. Sometimes from things that we really really really wanted. Sometimes from things that we were certain were meant to be. Sometimes from things that we’d already told all of our friends were a done-deal because we were so sure that we were going to get them. (Don’t do this. It’s a bad idea. Learn from our mistakes.) But there are ways that you can deal with that rejection, which we’ll post about as we get closer to our notification date. That are even ways that you can use that rejection to make yourself an even better artist.
As we’ve previously mentioned, we’ve had a lot of NTSA company members who applied to our program on a whim, never thinking that they’d be accepted. They did it because a friend was doing it, because they had some free time over the weekend, because they had a video lying around in their iPhone camera roll and thought “why not?” And the next thing they knew, they were heading out to New York City to make their off-Broadway debut. Just like them, you might think that you don’t have a chance of getting accepted — and, just like them, you might be one click away from making your dreams come true.
So on the day of our application deadline, we challenge you to click that submit button, to finish that application, to choose a video even though it might not be absolutely perfect. Take the chance. You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain.
