Ben Viertel directed one of NTSA’s first productions, Clipped, in 2013 and then served as NTSA’s Artistic Manager from 2014-2016. Born in France, Ben graduated from Carnegie Mellon University’s John Wells Directing Program. He currently serves as Artistic Director of Third Space in New York City. Recent productions include a new adaptation of Fassbinder’s The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant at the New Ohio Theatre (NYC), which was called “a gorgeous production” with “exuberant staging” and the American premiere of Marius von Mayenburg’s Fireface at The Brick (NYC), which The New York Times called “inventive and sophisticated.”
His critically-acclaimed production of Grindr: The Musical will be touring to Rome, Italy in April 2018. Ben has worked with various theatre companies across the country including Brooklyn Academy of Music (NYC), Roundabout Theater Company (Broadway), Huntington Theater Company, Bristol Valley Theater, The New Group (NYC), and The Civilians (NYC). Ben has also directed numerous episodes of the webseries [Blank] My Life. As an assistant director, Ben has previously worked with Tony Award nominee Moisés Kaufman (The Laramie Project) and Tony Award winner Billy Porter (Kinky Boots).
Ben is a member of the Kennedy Center Director’s Lab; a Manhattan Theater Club Directing Fellow; a Resident Artist at The Brick, the Abrons Arts Center, and The New Ohio; and a 2016-2017 Civilians’ R&D Group Member.
Ben recently wrapped up work on Kragtar: An American Monster Musical at Theatre Now New York off-Broadway (co-written by fellow NTSA alumni Sam French and Kyle Wilson). In the words of StageBuddy: “Watching Kragtar: An American Monster Musical gives you the feeling that you are watching a show that is about to enjoy all of the success of Rent. Witty, sharp, and relevant, with a Broadway-caliber cast and crew, this original musical . . . has all the potential to be a new cultural icon.”
We’re thrilled that Ben will be returning to NTSA this summer to direct our production of Loserville at the Theatre Under St. Peter’s. We hope that you’ll join our team off-Broadway this summer!
